Design, Vintage, Decor, Industrial: How to Understand the Words

At every flea market and design fair, the same words appear: design, vintage, decor, industrial.

These labels are often mixed together, but they do not mean the same thing. Using the right word helps respect the object.

Vintage

Vintage refers to objects from a past period, often from the twentieth century. It is linked to age, use, patina and memory.

Design

Design is not only a style. It is an intention. A design object answers a use, introduces a material, improves daily life or expresses a clear idea.

Decor

Decor is a broader word. It often focuses on immediate visual effect, without always considering history, function or authenticity.

Industrial

Industrial furniture comes from workshops, factories and working environments. It was built to resist use before becoming desirable in interiors.

Why Precision Matters

At Undesignable, we believe precise vocabulary protects objects and helps buyers. A signed Pierre Paulin chair cannot be placed on the same level as a generic decorative reproduction. Design is not just a trend. It is a culture.

Achille

A house is a machine for living in.
